Equilear Rug Care Products
Founded and run by horse owner (and generally lovely person) Anita Lear, Equilear Protective Solutions combines well over a decade of experience developing innovative textile treatments for the textile industry with the practical issues of keeping horsewear clean, waterproof, bacterial free and breathable without using environmentally toxic chemicals.
Aside from your tack, your horse will probably spend more time in his rug than any other piece of equipment. The problem with most over the counter (and even commercially available) rug treatments is they that are either diluted versions of industrial products and therefore less effective or so chemically thick and “sticky” that they effect the breathability of a rug by clogging up the rug fibres. Most rug products also contain chemicals which are environmentally toxic, meaning horse owners are placing potentially harmful chemicals against the largest organ in their horse’s body, their skin.
Equilear has developed a range of ecological, non-toxic and cost effective products to help keep horse rugs and textiles in top condition naturally. Their products are free from fluro-carbons, paraffin and other chemical based toxins which is not only good news for the environment but great for your horse. Equilear products are not only at the very forefront of emerging textile technologies, using eco-friendly formulas that are as effective if not more so than any conventional chemical based solution available on the market, but they are the products trusted by their developer to look after and care for her own horse’s rugwear and that to us, as horse owners and carers, counts for an awful lot.
EquiProtect is a water repellent treatment for horse rugs and other textiles (riding jackets, ski pants, mucking out wear and more!). At the very forefront of textile treatment technologies EquiProtect is an exceptional eco-friendly, biodegradable formula that imitates the functional principles of water repellence found in bird feathers. Due to its unique molecular structure it is up to 10 times more powerful than other conventional waterproof treatments available on the market yet at the same time is completely free of fluoro-carbon, paraffins and other hazardous chemicals.
Water on the surface of items treated with EquiProtect will bead and run off (just like water on feather) as opposed to soaking into the fibre. This innovative treatment allows fabric to truly remain as breathable as a feather while improving its resistance to abrasion.
EquiProtect is available as a 500ml spray-on treatment or concentrated wash-in formula.
We recommend the EquiProtect SPRAY for keeping on hand whether about the yard or away from home as a quick fix when you can’t be without a rug, to top-up the water repellence of specific areas fabric most commonly rubbed, seams and areas of repair.
EquiProtect WASH will give new life to older rugs or items that have seen heavy use, it is a concentrated solution that requires only 50ml per rug/2-3Kg washing load. A little goes a long way 500ml of EquiProtect WASH will treat up to 10 rugs.
Ensure all surface are cleaned thoroughly prior to application of EquiProtect.
EquiClean Cleaner is a specially formulated textile cleaning solution developed for rugs and other breathable fabrics. Unlike most conventional cleaning products which contain a scouring agent, soap or detergent agent to clean, EquiClean is scouring agent, soap and detergent free. It has been specifically developed to effectively lift and remove dirt and grime (including bacterial and fungus and mould) from an item during washing without affecting the existing water repellent and breathable properties of a fabric.
EquiClean is a concentrated formula, on average you will only require 75ml per rug / 2-3kg load, this is half the amount required by other rug cleaning treatments. 500ml of EquiClean will wash up to 6 rugs.
For items that see heavy use i.e rugs we recommend treating the item with EquiProtect after cleaning.
EquiSilver is a revolutionary anti-microbial, anti-bacterial treatment specifically developed for textiles such as horse rugs, leather and clothing, offering protection against the spreading of health hazardous bacteria and fungus responsible for skin conditions, mould growth and bad odours which attract flies.
The properties of colloidal silver are a well-documented fact, it has been proven to combat skin conditions and fight viruses like MRSA in humans, as well as help battle thrush in hooves and assist with wound healing. Bacteria and fungus thrive in rugs and are one of the main contributions to skin problems such as ring worm and sweet itch. The ideal temperature for bacteria to multiply is around 40˚C which just happens to be the generally recommended temperature of many rugs cleaning products, this means that many rug cleaners are not necessarily killing bacteria but potentially washing bacteria and fungus from one rug to another. Many of the commercial rug cleaners available in the market that do offer anti-bacterial properties often contain harmful anti-microbial chemicals that are left behind in the fabric after cleaning and migrate from the textile onto the skin attacking the skin’s own natural bacteria or can be absorbed into the skin causing irritation.
EquiSilver has been specifically formulated to affect its anti-microbial properties only the surface of the textile fibre. This means that textiles treated with EquiSilver are protected against the spreading of health hazardous bacteria but that EquiSilver will not migrate onto the skin surface, leaving health skin bacteria unaffected.
The unique features of EquiSilver have many textile applications:
- Control bacterial and fungal growth of the inside of rugs during heavy use or before storage. One application to the lining of a rug is all that is needed this can help prevent cross contamination when swapping rugs between horses, reduce chances of contracting skin conditions and reduce odours that can attract flies.
- Spray the inside of sports bandages, leg wraps or protective boots to discourage harmful bacterial growth in sweat and skin residue.
- Spray lightly over leather before storing to reduce white mould growth when tack is not in use.
- Keep riding helmets fresh be eliminating bacterial and fungal growth from sweat build-up in the lining.
For commercial situations or those horse owners with a herd to care all EquiLear products are available in larger volumes upon request.
